Need help with a vertical tripod mount...

I saw one of these the other day, but I can't find it again. The one I saw was like $200. Do any of you know of a cheaper version? Like $50 or less?

It is an L shaped piece of metal that screws into the tripod socket on the bottom of the camera, providing another one on the bottom of the plate, as well as one one on the right side of the camera so that you can mount your camera vertically on the tripod to use the controls on the battery grip.

I wish I knew what to call it, but 9 years in photography and that is the first one I have ever seen.

A company called. "The Right Stuff" makes the expensive one, but you get what you pay for. Theirs is very high quality. I think that Wimberly also makes something like that. They are also expensive.

This is photography so you are supposed to be accustomed to taking a hosing on prices. I was preconditioned to paying through the nose because I used to fly, but the cost of maintenance, inspections, and IFR certifications, hanger, and a zillion other things caused me to sell my share of a partnership -- just in time before fuel prices went through the stratosphere.

What you're talking about is an L bracket or L plate. Google it!

Thats an "L" plate (or bracket). Kirk and Really Right Stuff make them for many camera models - you need an Arca-Swiss compatible clamp on your tripod head yo utilize it. I've used them for years and consider it an essential piece of kit - never leaves my camera!

Don't you find it uncomfortable when hand holding ? - I have never tied one.

The RRS L bracket is way more comfortable when shooting portrait (holding the bottom grip of my 1D2) then for instance an RC2.

I see from your gear list that you've got a gripped 30D. Here's a listing on eBay for the Really Right Stuff "L" bracket you're looking for...

Really Right Stuff and Kirk are the two most popular companies that make these, I'm not really sure anyone else even offers anything close to the variety they do. They have custom fitted L brackets for just about every camera and no you won't find them cheap ever except used... and even then they're probably not cheap.

Nope, not even used... I have been watching them sell on ebay and everything from RRS really does sell used for about what it goes for new.

I knew ya'll would have the info I needed. I think I have some saving to do. After just buying the 100-400mm I am a bit strapped.
