I just spent the last hour reading every thread with the keywords "430 580". I'm completely stumped on this issue.

Basically I borrowed the 580EX II to see how well it would work as master for the 430EX.
A few days ago I used the ST-E2 which fired off my 430EX perfectly.

I have the 430EX set on ETTL and pretty much tried all settings on the 580EX II.
What am I doing wrong and what should I try?
Help greatly appreciated... I received an invitation to a Fashion show and plan to use both there.

Tell us exactly what you did on the 580EX II to set it up as a master. Without that, there'll no way for us to determine what went wrong or if the flash is defective.

Alright.
Basically I attached it to my 400D right away.. (which is on manual)
Put it on ETTL mode and tried it out. (with the flash unit pointing directly forward and the 430 facing the cam with the 580 on the table)
I also tried both other modes by hitting the 'mode' button(ETTL, M and Multi)..... basically when i take a shot the 580ex II fires off perfectly every time in every mode but the 430ex just sits there flashing its red light at me.

Is it one of the custom functions I need to adjust on the 580EX II?
Without the manual I don't know which number stands for what. :/

You need to put the 580EX II into Master mode. WIth the older 580EX, there was a switch at the foot of the flash for that. But with the 580EX II, you need to press and hold the Zoom button for a couple of seconds and then use the dial to set it from "Off" to "Master On".
