If you want to see comparison shots go to the link below you can change focal length and f stop to see comparison. Very useful

Both lenses are solid, the Tamron is a great lens for the money. I went with the Canon only because of the IS and ring USM. I needed the faster focusing and IS as I shoot low light quite a bit.

if the baby is the main subject, have her purchase a tamron 28-75, and a prime, canon 50 1.4, 85 1.8, or 100 f2. Of course it wound double as a very good walk around lens, but perfect portrait lens on the crop body.

1st, I'd like to say you're a very nice person to give your sister such a wonderful gift. That being said, The Tamron, nifty 50, and a flash like the 430EX would be a great start. That should hopefully give you enough spending room to get the other accessories you intend to get.

Thanks! I'm leaning towards doing just that. I think I might want on the flash until the baby's 100th day (Korean tradition of celebrating the baby's 100th day as a pretty big event).

I've only seen the baby twice so far and I never knew that I could miss something so much. I have to drive 1.5 - 2hours each way to go to Philly but it could be much worse. I just got spoiled by them living 15-20 minutes for so long but at least I know that when I give her these gifts it'll be something that she can use and get great pictures out of for a long, long time.

I am giving her a nifty fifty for low light portraits of her daughter but I want to get her something that she can still use now but..

my Nifty Fifty hunts a LOT more in low light than my Tamron. Actually, I don't have much problems of that kind with my Tamron.
