Hello
I've just bought a 450D specifically to take to the British Grand Prix, and this was taken on the first days shooting.

It was the Friday practice. Alonso's Renault had just dropped its guts at the end of Hanger Straight, so there was a reasonable chance someone would get caught out.

and Massa did.

as it was a Grand Prix, there were a lot of pro photographers there, with Canon L lenses like oil drums (yep, that's jealousy;)) - but I doubt anyone got a better photo than this one, as there weren't many of us in the stand, and no one else seemed to be aware of the track conditions.

my skill was tracking the car that crashed. the luck was that on continuous shooting, i just happened to get this exact shot at the exact moment of impact. It was also lucky that we were even in that stand, as nothing much had happened until then, and we were about to move!

so i recon 10% skill, 90% luck. best photo I have ever taken though :D

anyone else got 'lucky' photos?

You should have sold it to Autosport... No-one got photos of the impact... Could have upgraded the 450D straight away!

As for "skill" moments this one is hard to beat for me. 5fps shooting and only 1 of them had any fire in it

Not a Motorsports shot at all (despite the presence of an invisible 'car' ...) but, no denying the "skill" involved here ... I brilliantly managed to press the shutter at the moment that a truck describing the action of the photo was 10 seconds away from coming into frame ... of course, that's entirely due to skill.

Looks like someone was chasing the car with a flamethrower!

I'll have to search my archives, I've got pictures of Robert Kubica's F1 crash in Montreal during the 2007 Canadian GP where his car splintered and shattered in front of our grandstand.

Here's the difference 2/3rds of a second makes. In the first shot you can just see the tyres smoking as something in the engine has let go. 2 frames later it's an inferno... But things always happen really fast in top-fuel drag racing.
Roger.

Don't be sad about it Graham. I didn't hear anything either and they knew to expect my shots ;). Mine are in Motorsport News though

And that lotus shot was taken on one of the coldest days I can remember. Froze my knackers off but it was worth it...
