"The simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as the precise organization of forms which gives that event its proper expression... . In photography, the smallest thing can be a great subject. The little human detail can become a leitmotif." — Henri Cartier-Bresson

Challenge #62 -- "Decisive Moment"

Show me your best decisive moment. That is the moment available in every image where the subjects and actions come together to form the best composition. There are no limits to the style of entries, but I will say that having aspects of humanity (either people or their remnants) in the shot is expected. It is not limited to classic street photography but typically things like landscapes are not associated with this concept.

For many examples, reference the free e-book here:

To make this more interesting, I'm going to throw in a USD $25 gift certificate to Adorama or B&H as a prize to the winner of this week's challenge. (Residents of other continents may pick another store if they offer an equivalent online gift card.)

Hoff, I have never seen his work before, and it was eye opening to see his talents! Thanks for that. Now I understand your B&W photo in Urban.
This will be a challenge.

you're a great friend, but if Zombies chase us, I am tripping you.

Nice! I look forward to your entry. And the concept can be found in all styles but for further enjoyment, please see some of my other favorites...
Martin Parr (external link), Bruce Gilden (external link), and Magnum relative newbie Carl De Keyzer (external link) has an amazing sense of timing and juxtaposition.

The true decisive moment was putting my stuff away before it got rained on :)

Can't remember any of the data for this (I don't have the original CR2 with me here, sadly), but I'd guess at 30D with f/2.8 60mm. Probably at about f/5.6, probably about 1/50th, probably ISO400.

I'll play.

To me this is a decisive moment, after covering several fatalities from members of the Service, I had the chance to go for a homecoming, after their 18 months out in the sand box.

What I saw was incredibly overwhelming -photographically speaking- as emotions ran high and there were opportunities for photos here and there and everywhere. Still, for a good part of the day I felt I did not have it. The story, the shot. The one image that told the story all at once.

Then this shot came along. It made a few covers, and I was happy about that, although it means more to me that I was allowed by the good muses to witness and capture such a personal moment.

Taken with a 1D, 24-205 or 70-200. About five months ago? or so.

It's a good day if I'm looking down at the grass and not up at the roots.
