Is there a sleep mode or something on the 580EX II?

During a photo shoot, about 5 shots or under (intervals of 5 to 10 seconds apart), two of my flashes don’t sync with the Pocket Wizards.

I have to manually “wake them up” per say.

The batteries are new.

Is there a setting on the 580EX II that I’m not setting it correctly?

Set C.Fn-01 to 1 to disable auto power off on the 580EX II.

thanks for the tip.

But, why would it go into sleep mode or lose sync with the PW while I'm shooting. It's not like there was a long period of pause between shoots.

Hmm, that's a good questions. They usually don't auto power off until after more than a minute or two of idle time.

What did you have to do to "wake" them up again?

Yea they usually take quite a while to "fall asleep".... Thats odd... Are you sure the batteries had a full charge? I mean I know they were new, but maybe try testing them? IDK...

According to the manual (interesting how much one can learn from them, isn't it?), the 580 EX II goes asleep after 1.5 to 15 minutes, depending upon what you are doing. If set to slave mode, it goes to sleep after 60 minutes (although that can be changed).

While you can futz with custom functions, it is easier to....

To keep the flash from sleeping after 90 sec. you must force it into "dumb" slave mode.

Put the wireless switch in the "SLAVE" position.
Press and hold the "mode" button for about 2 sec. until the "M" manual indicator blinks.

The nice thing about this is....no need to reset the flash CFs for normal operation.

Only problem with that is that the AF assist lamp blinks every so often which some may find annoying, especially when there's no need for it to be doing that. :)
