HELP !!!

Can't decide !!!

I recently owned a 400D, until it decided to take a tumble from out of my bag which I had forgotten to zip properly... down some marble steps.

Now the insurance company have rendered it useless.

So... they are sending me £400 in vouchers to buy a new camera. Obviously this is the value of the 400D. I am told I can put it towards any camera I wish. Obviously I want better than a 400D, but I'm going to have to put some extra to it.... so time to make a decision....

Do I go with the cheaper 450D or the more expensive 40D ?.... both within my budget.

Definitely a no-brainer... Go for the 40D.... Be patient and put the extra cash towards it... You won't regret it... I saved for 6 months to get mine...

BTW: Welcome to POTN...

If you liked the size and handling of the 400D, the 450 is a step up in features/quality. The 40D is in a higher "class" -- bigger and more sturdy build with more accessible controls.

I'd try to find a retailer that has the 40D on display and try it out. Some people prefer the Rebel smaller size, others prefer the larger bodies and heftier build. It's up to you! From what I gather, the image quality between the two is not different enough to be a deal maker/breaker. I don't own either, though, so others will likely chip in with other differences.

I say the 40D!

I had an Xti and it was great but recently upgraded to the 40D. It is a little larger but I like it - it's easier to hold onto. Also, I can tell a difference in the quality of the photos. The 40D takes excellent photos!

Also, if you have large hands like I do, you'll definitely like the 40D... Go try one out and see if it's right for you..

I have a 18-55mm, a 17-85mm IS, and a 70-300mm IS.... all Canon lenses.

One post in, and I'm already glad I joined up. Thank you so far.

If you're not shooting low light photos or situations where you need a fast burst mode, the XSi would be more than adequate. Those are its two main deficiencies vs. the 40D; most of the others are very minor. Maybe the lack of a PC sync port is significant if you're doing lots of off-camera flash.

I tend to take action sports, weddings, urban and family pics.

i had the pleasure of comparing, 450,40,5 and a 1dnmkii

the 40 and 5 felt great, but the 1d was out of the world.

if i wanted a crop, 40D

the 450D's shutter sounds really goofy just like the 350/400 does, i hit it once and put it back down in embarrasment

I'd go with the 40D myself, but I could be slightly biased :D

Hardly a no brainer. I had the XTI for almost a year and it performed just as well as my 40D I now have. In fact, the pics look better off the XTI, the 40Ds are a bit softer. The XSI is even better from what I used of it. I will say this. If the difference is only $150, get the 40D. If its $300-$400, get the XSI and a nice lens.

Take it from a former REBEL series owner............... Forget the similarities in specs, once you try an xxD series, you'll never go back to Rebels. Many will disagree, but if you get the 40D, you'll see what I mean.
