I am planning on picking up a wide angle lense and I have been suggested the 17-40 f4L by a few people now. I was just wondering if it is worth picking up or is there a better alternative to this lense?

Go up to the archives and check out the current 17-40 thread...

I have one .. I love it

Obviously works as an UWA on a 5D but it makes a great walking around lens on an APS-C body...

Used ones seem to be easy to find for around $560 - $575. To me that's a great price for a great lens. I bought a used one and haven't regretted it. :D

I bought one for landscapes and wide group shots. It's very sharp at f/4 and insanely almost macro sharp at f/5.6 It just blew me away, I love Canon Ls

Awesome lens... sad I'm parting with it (to get a more low-light friendly kit) :( but, such is life.

Great lens. I think it's perfect for nature landscapes. If I shot people I'd have something else which was faster. My nifty and 28-135 (excellent copy BTW) go on when things get darker without tripod.

Mine is on 90% of the time.

Not fast enough if you are shooting indoors, but a flash will fix that.

I recently bought one. Whatever lens you choose, you'll always get buyers doubt before even buying if you read around. I found people complaining about sharpness wide open, but I thought, what the hell, I need wide angle for a trip in september...and it has to be better than the kit lens.

So I went and bought it. And it's sharp as hell wide open, AF is very quick and completely silent (unlike the 70-200 for example, which makes noise because of the lens rotating). It focuses seriously close, produces great results and it's an excellent lens for all around stuff, not just landscapes. People, flowers, whatever :)
