17-40 F4L is it worth the buy?

I am planning on picking up a wide angle lense and I have been suggested the 17-40 f4L by a few people now. I was just wondering if it is worth picking up or is there a better alternative to this lense?

Why not consider the 17-55 2.8 IS if using a crop body? Would be a more fitting lens to be honest.

I have one and use it for landscapes and have no problem with it on a 1.6, 1.3 or full frame body...
There is always the 16-35, or ultrawides from Sigma, Tamron and Tokina that will work on a APS-c sized sensor...

Mine should be here on Monday. I was having trouble deciding due to reviews on the net. I read a lot of magazines, and look at a lot of extraordinary photographers work. The amount that use this lens for their wide shots is somewhere in the 90% region at least in the sample ive read. That was enough for me.
