Quick poll seeing what someone would buy with roughly a $6000 camera body budget.

yup.

I agree with the above. 5D and some nice lenses. Heck, 5D is plenty of camera for anyone, pro or amateur. Good glass will be more beneficial than a new camera body. I might also consider some lighting equipment too..

I'd sooner get a used Leica M6, a few Leica lenses, and a good 35mm scanner. Much better use of your money and you still get the Leica glass.

After reading this, there is no way I'm getting an M8, even though I don't shoot in war zones.

Both shot wide open that absolutely blows me away that even without alterations the Leica image could be that much farther behind.

Very revealing review. But why is that guy crying about ISO 2500 when it was fine? Beats the pants off of Tri-X at 1600.

i thought about the M8 last year as I love some of the Leica lenses, but my pal John has one and after using it I don't see the results. From your options I would go Mk III but otherwise would go D700 ... actually, I just did that!

Leica M8 would be my choice if I want to impress others.
I'd probably get a 5D or a couple of 40D's and a bunch of lenses if I wanted the best IQ for the dough.

I am happy with my current 35mm rangefinder and SLRs, so if I had US$6,000 to spend on camera stuff, the following would be on the list:

  • Mamiya 7 II rangefinder with 80mm lens
  • Used Mamiya C330 TLR with 80mm lens
  • Holga
  • Nikon Super Coolscan 9000 ED 35mm/Medium-Format Film scanner
  • Sekonic 758D Light Meter
That would leave me with about $600 for film, printer ink, and paper…

So no, I would not buy a Leica M8 or, for that matter, a hypothetical significantly improved "M9".

And should I come across more money and feel the absolute urge to get some Leica glass, then fine, I'll just slap it on the Bessa.

If I were to buy my lens collection from Warehouse Express today, I'd be out £7,500. On that basis, I'm committed to Canon. Sign me up for the 1d MkIII.
