I'm thinking that it's the lines on the ceiling combined with the light against her dress (also a line) and the diagonal, wide-angle effect. Can someone else please explain to me why I feel like this is a good shot?

Thanks!

It has its moments. However, there are also some negative aspects to the the shot.

There is some ghosting which I assume is from a combination of flash and slow shutter speed.

The worst aspect of the shot is the blown out wedding gown. There is almost no detail in 50% of that gown.

My last concern would be very dependent upon whom your shot is expected to please. I would think that the gentleman (father of the bride?) would be important, but I would also assume that the bride herself is the key person here. Why anyone would want such an unflattering picture, I cannot imagine. What little of her face that is visible is mostly in deep shadow, and the camera is looking right into her left armpit.

I see, so my positive ideas about it aren't warranted.

I agree with Bob.and rarely does anyone look at the ceiling unless it is the subject of the shot?

The bride would not like her armpit like that..she wants to look beautiful.( which I am sure she is, just not at this angle.would work for a night club shot)

Hmm, it's not showing her armpit though; the shadows are from the veil and they "look" like the underfolds.

I see that it's not very good; I thought the lines of the ceiling and the brightness of her gown led the eye and converged on the bride.

Here's a rework considering the points noted:

That is a marked improvement in the highlight detail of her gown.

Not all wedding photography has to be "posed" and there's a spontaneity you've got here that people will also like to see. At this point of the night, people are letting there hair down which you've captured nicely. As a candid shot it works well, they're clearly not posing and it doesnt look unflattering really, at all. I would say though, there's probably a bit too much ceiling what with the lights/security camera things (cant tell what they are!) so maybe crop it down a bit. You'll get rid of that bit of distraction but still keep some of the ceiling lines. And the improved detail in the gown definitely looks better.

Those are party lights, it's on the dance floor. Hmm. Well these things are all contributing to my providing the client with a better finished product, because the edits I do are on the full-size images that will be given to her.

The gown is much better showing more detail.but as I look at it again.she does look quite large( tall and wider) compared to Dad..... Its the angle for sure.....

Granddad. She's the primary point of focus, not him. It's a celebration and there's life and motion and joy. For that matter, she was about 5'8 or so and around the 160-180lbs range, so she wasn't a small girl.

I wasn't implying on her size, just the composition of the couple.;)

Print it off.....

I don't usually praise my own work very much, but I'm obviously looking at it through different eyes and seeing it in a specific light that is equally different.

You and your client are the ones that make the decision....:)

I prioritize what my clients think, but I have retouched it based on what I think looks good. I also provide the original color versions because I realize my opinions are different.
