Im completely clueless. Please help me out.

Hello everyone. Well when it comes to lighting im so lost it is not even funny. My best friend has asked me to take there photo with there new born that will be arriving in a few months for there Christmas card they want to send out. I would love to get a simple setup up of light that might give me a better result. Is there a kit that is recomended to start with? Also what accessorys should i be looking to get along with it ei: pocket wizard for wireless trasmitting. Any help would be awesome.

strobist.com will be your friend: read up on the Lighting 101 section, and then you should be more or less equipped to make your own decisions on gear.

The simplest is merely to use the existing lighting, and also to not have the source of that light be quite close to lens position! You want light off to one side, to render form to the subjects faces, rather than the flat snapshot light that plagues normal amateur photography! Don't spend money on lighting, when simply positioning the subjects to optimally use the existing light can achieve very flattering lighting.
