Wilt Reader's Digest Condensed version of War and Peace [POTN Vol 1] More info | Aug 03, 2008 09:36 | #4 Test focus on real subjects, not a test chart at 45 degree plane! It is simple to align your camera parallel to a row of books which are staggered back progressively a uniform distance on the shelf, or to a line of batteries (all in a manner like an echelon). Here is a hastily shot photo as an example of the concept, but not a real carefully done actual focus test. Now, do take notice that in this example, the leftmost Zagat guide is 3.5" behind the Bay Area Backroads and in spite of that, one cannot see super obvious out-of-focus books in the line-up, simply because the fact that the DOF at this shooting distance (48") and FL (55mm) and aperture (f/2.8 ) is 1.6" deep! If it looks well focused on normal subjects, forget the test charts. (I know, the small posting size masks out of focus books, but I hope you get my point about real world testing.) You need to give me OK to edit your image and repost! Keep POTN alive and well with member support https://photography-on-the.net/forum/donate.php

GTBaker Mostly Lurking 16 posts Joined Jan 2008 More info | I'm currently emailing back 'n' forth with Canon Canada with my 40D and 70-200mm 2.8L Non-IS. I'm having focus issues with either the lense or body. I suspect the lense as my other lenses are fine. flickr

GTBaker's depth of field could be an example of image taking at f/4. The idea of using your excellent 70-200mm at f/2.8 is to achieve exactly what you are experiencing. Shallow depth of field and lovely background blur (aka bokey). It would be helpful if the EXIF (camera settings) data was included with the problem description. ______________
