Hi all,
I've been using the 18-55mm Kit lens that came with my 400D for almost a year now, and have decided that I need to really start thinking about upgrading.

I've been looking at the 17-40 F4L for a long time, the only problem being the current price.

Are there any lower priced lenses with comparable quality, in image first then build. I’m looking for a focal length similar to 18-55mm with at least an 18mm in the wide angle.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I upgraded from the kit lens to the Tamron 17-50. You lose 5mm on the long end but I don't care. It has great sharpness and overall IQ, as well as fixed 2.8 apeture which is good for low light. I paid 360 for mine used. Another choice is the sigma 17-70 macro. The sigma doesn't have fixed 2.8, but is a little cheaper. Good luck!!

EDIT: I also noticed you have the 75-300...You may also consider upgrading to the EF-S 55-250 IS. Also a great lens and good value.

I upgraded from the 18-55 kit lens to the 18-55 IS. Big improvement for a modest price.

The Tamron seems like a very good lens, though I have yet to find a good review between it and the 17-40 F4L. The 18-55 IS was an idea, but thought that as it comes as the new kit lens, I'll probably out grow it aswell though it would be an improvement for awhile.

As for the the 75-300 it will soon be sold, and a 70-200 or 150-500 OS will replace it.

I upgraded to the Tamron 17-50mm, it is a wonderful lens. You won't be disappointed. It is tack sharp and the colors are wonderful.

I know the subject is kind of goofy but this shows off the sharpness a little bit.
