My Sunpak 383 arrived and I got a chance to use 2 lights for the first time. I am posting them here instead of the people forum because I really want to hear how to make the lighing better. What did I do wrong? What did i do right?

The Sunpak camera right firing into a shoot through umbrella. I had the 580 on camera but pointing camera left into a large reflector. I know they are not that great. I need more seperation from the background so hair light will be next.

These were taken on my kitchen table with a black cloth tacked to the ceiling.

Are there supposed to be photos in your post?

(I can't see them - or red "Xs" either.)

Sorry. My fault. I had external links disabled in the gallery. Should be fixed now.

Great shots! The only suggestion I could possibly make is one you already know about (hair light). But even without it, these are very nice. Make sure you pat yourself on the shoulder for a job well done! :)

Thanks guys for your comments. I appreciate it. It is very encouraging. I hate to admit it but just this last week a light went on in my head. I realized that I have to underexpose the ambient light so much that the flash is all that is lighting my subject. I had quite a bit of natural light I could have used for these but I had done that before and wanted to work through this and get it right with just the flashes as my light source.

Are you kidding, Char? Those are great so don't second guess yourself or think you should be setting the lights differently. You have a good separation from highlight to shadow ... and nothing's overexposed. I think you did an outstanding job especially considering you've stated you're just learning multiple lights.

Kudo's !!! If you can come up with something reflective just prop it up above/behind the baby's head and out of picture frame. If you angle it to bounce the light back onto the top of his hair you'll have perfect separation of hair from dark background and won't need any other lights. Heck ... if you're in the kitchen just get a small bit of aluminum foil - crinkle it up - spread it out again fairly flat then prop it in place. Perfect reflector on the cheap !!!

Thanks. The reflector in the back is a good idea. I have one of those big silver ones that you put in your car. I will try it next time. Thanks a lot.
