For some folks it is doing a shoot on the fly, in a public or private space, without getting clearance or permission.

For some folks, it means surreptitious shots taken of unsuspecting folks going about their business, sometimes even shots taken from the hip.

I have even heard it applied to the seamy underside of the hobby, upskirts and voyeurism.

Is this just a catch-all phrase for sneaky photography or is there a better description?

For me, it is doing whatever it takes to get a picture. I'm reminded of that picture of the guy in sandals leaping over to another rock with tripod in hand to get a picture.

Hmm, For me gorilla implies forcefully and aggressivley...not so much sneaky.

But I am at a loss for a word to sum up sneaky.

And as a poor attempt at humor: I often here it refered to "Zoo Photography"

This is called illegal.

I have even heard it applied to the seamy underside of the hobby, upskirts and voyeurism.

This I also call illegal.

This is street photography.

If you mean "gorilla", the largest of the apes, then forceful and aggressive sounds right. If you mean "guerrilla", a member of a paramilitary organization that attacks a larger and more power regular military group through sneak attacks and small raids (commonly called "insurgents" on the evening news), then sneaky is very much a part of it.

Interesting...I had never differentiated the two. But in the context of Guerrilla warfare, Then Guerilla Photography as referanced by the OP makes sense.

I have heard of Gorilla (or is it Guerrilla) marketing, And had just always assumed it to be aggresive marketing. I may have been wrong in my assumption.

Thanks for the enlightenment!

Gorilla photography = the kind often seen in National Geographic.

Guerilla photography = the kind that contributed to the demise of Diana Windsor.

Sneaky photography I call "ninja photography", although street photography is a more proper name. Sometimes, you just have to be a ninja to get the shot that you want, especially when shooting people.

It is "guerrilla marketing" and you are half right. From the wikippedia entry for guerrilla marketing:

"Guerrilla Marketing" was coined by Jay Conrad Levinson (external link) in his popular 1984 (external link) book Guerrilla Marketing, as an unconventional system of promotions (external link) on a very low budget, by relying on time, energy and imagination instead of big marketing budgets. The term has since entered the popular vocabulary to also describe aggressive, unconventional marketing methods generically.

I guess we could say it started out as "guerrilla" but it has become "gorilla" :D

Gorilla is all brawn and no brains. Guerrilla really is by definition being weaker than the competition but making up for it by "thinking outside the box" and making the most of whatever you have.
