Here are a couple of shots with my old (12 years) Tamron 200-400mm Zoom. I can't seem to get the focus sharp and from time to time I see a blue halo or chromatic aberration like below. Maybe its time to move up to some serious "L" telephoto glass. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. The first thing I see is that a shutter speed of 1/125 is generally to slow for focal length of 390mm. For your crop body your shutter speed should be more like 1/600 to hand hold. The CA may be inherent to the lens; shooting in situations that don't include such direct sunlight will probably help that.
