Ok, I need help from off camera flash photographers.

Some info on the photos

Time: 9 PM'ish
Location: Pool
Camera & Lens: Canon 5D with Canon 24-70
Camera setting: F/5.6 - 1/250 - ISO100
Flash: Two 580EX II
Flash setup: Off camera with PW II
Flash location from subject: One at left approx. 35-40 degrees and One at right 35-40 degrees.

What am I doing that is causing the corners have a solid black areas?

I changed to 40D with 70-200 F/2.8 IS with same setup and flash locations but didn't have the same problem.

Is something wrong on the 5D or the glass to cause this?

No edits on the photos. This is straight from the camera.

Am I seeing the shutter on those pics? Could it be the sync rate?...

How come I didn't have the same problem when I used the 40D with 70-200 F/2.8 IS with the same manual settings?

Yeah, the max sync speed for the 5D is 1/200. BTW, on pic #1 and 3, looks like only one flash fired.

It probably did.

I have no idea but my 580EX II goes into sleep mode during the shoot.

I have to constantly "wake it up" by pressing the pilot button. I'm still trying to figure out what's causing this.

That problem is on this thread. :)

The 5D has a max sync speed of 1/200 although I wouldn't expect the black bar to be as thick as it is in the picture at 1/250.

The 40D has a max sync speed of 1/250.

For the studio strobes you may not even be able to get 1/200 with 5D. My best luck is at 1/160, someone mentioned 1/125 somewhere in the manual. 40D has smaller sensor, 1/250 all the way no problem in my experience.

If you get a chance, I'd like to see a similar shot metered to use mostly ambient light (maybe stopped down 1 stop and tripod needed of course) and then use your flash as a light fill on her face/body. I think you might like the results.
