Reproductions of A.J. Watson-built Indianapolis 500 roadsters from the early 1960's were the highlights of a display and demonstration of vintage oval track race cars at the Salem (Indiana) Speedway:

It wasn't just "These guys". I remember Stirling Moss in a t-shirt & canvas 'helmet'. He didn't wear a belt as he wanted to be thrown away from the car. :D

Attitudes have changed from the era when this midget, with a Crosley Hot Shot motor, was built, but it took decades.

Formula One cars weren't required to have seat belts until the middle or late 1960's. At one point in the 70's, roll cages for sprints and midgets were banned. Even now, karts usually don't have belts or cages, and they're faster now than midgets were a few generations ago.
