Stick your 28-135 at about 35mm for a day or two and see what you think. I find a walkabout lens more suitable to be a zoom lens to make it that much more versatile to be honest but I wonder what a prime would be like now.

Its a PERFECT walk around lens. Some of the greatest street photographers have and do use it as just that. FF of course. Maybe a 24L on a crop.

My first walkaround lens is Sigma 30 1.4 and it worked fine. Sometimes I go with 50 1.4 only, still fine. So like the advise above, use your zoom at 35mm for a day and decide whether that is right for you.

I spent the day at the Grand Haven, MI Coast Guard Festival with only my 5D and 35L and couldn't have been happier. I have had zooms, but feel more comfortable with primes. I use the three primes listed in my signature for everything (including weddings). The 35L is an absolute joy as a walk around for me.

$1600 seems like a really high price seeing as it's $1180 most other places when it's in stock.

It is the last one in stock... and it comes with a UV filter

Buy this item with Canon 72mm UV Haze Filter by Canon today!

Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide Angle Lens for Canon SLR Cameras + Canon 72mm UV Haze Filter

Total List Price: $1,940.00
Buy Together Today: $1,632.18

...and on a 40D I would pick the 24L as the walkaround.

On a crop the 20mm 2.8 would provide a 32mm FOV.

i think the 35L makes a perfect walkaround for the 1.6 crop body, I'm not a big fan of that FL on a FF sensor, but will say it's one of my favoritesn that I need to have back in my bag at some point soon.

I use a 50/1.4 on my 450D for walkaround now and love it. It's slightly too long though, so I have ordered a 35L which should be perfect. I plan to get a 5D soon and then it will be even better. I have 85/1.8 and 135L too, but wouldn't hesitate to bring only a 35L for shorter trips.

I think the 35L would be great for street photography. I would love to get my hands on this lens. 1.4 yummyness.
