I am sure this has been beat to death but I need a monitor and looking for a CRT. I am trying to keep it under 500.00 , I just don't have the extra to spend.

I am looking at these three

Viewsonic 19" G90FB

Samsung SyncMaster 957MB

NEC Accusync 120

Anyone know anything about these monitors ? Or have any other sugestions.

If I had the mony to spend on a high end monitor I would but unfortunately
I don't.
Any help would be apreciated.

Thanks !

The hardest part is finding a new one, I believe that no one makes any CRT's any more.

I have 2 second hand 19 inch CRTs at home, and still think they are better than any LCD I have seen (although some of the high end Apple and Dell screens are pretty damn good).

Fortunately there are still plenty of second hand CRTs around, look for a anything with a Sonly Trinitron Flat screen in it. Possibly the best CRT ever made.
They were sold as Sony, but also rebadged and sold as Dells, HP's etc, but all have Trinitron on them somewhere to identify them.

I have found new ones in all of these, are they old models that are still on the shelves ?
Here is the NEC Accusync 120, it is a 21" and has all of the right specs from what I have read.

I have seen ratings and review that were high but then again who knows how much the individuals writing the reviews know.
I am using a 5 year KDS flat screen and I am starting to have trouble with it. This was a cheap monitor so I guess anything would be better than this one.
Even though this is a cheap one , I have had good success with it when calibrated.

I would say it is old stock, but it is possible someone is still making them somewhere.
I haven't seen new CRT's anywhere here in NZ for about 3 or 4 years now though.

I wouldn't pay US$300 for one either, you should be able to pick up a good condition second hand for a fraction of that price.

Thanks for you reply and input.
My problem is that I have been reading that unless you get into the over 1000.00 range for an LCD then you are not getting the quality of the less expensive CRT.
I know alot of the pros are using LCD's but they are in the 1000.00 to 3000.00 range. If I were making an income I would do the same. I am doing in studio portraite shots using strobes and I am trying to do the best I can under the cercumstances.
My monitor being appox.5 years old is getting small shadow like squares 1" x 1" all over it. I am afraid to by a used one and not knowing what I am getting.
Thanks again, you are the only one that has given me any help on the subject and I appreciate it.

Greg

I've been an anti-LCD kinda guy for years now. We switched to all Dell LCDs at work a few years ago, including some that cost well over $1,000 (for our imaging systems in the Radiology departments) and I've been very disappointed with how my photos look on every one of the LCD monitors I've tried here. At home, I currently use a ViewSonic 19" "Professional Series" pf95+ that I bought about four years ago.

Last month I bought a new Dell Inspiron 530 PC, and it came with a 20" widescreen LCD monitor. I wasn't sure what I'd do with it. Either set up a dual monitor system so I could use it to hold my Photoshop pallettes while I work on images on the CRT. Or, maybe just stow it away in a closet. But, surprisingly, I love this LCD. My photos look so much better on it than on the CRT!

I'm not sure why this one seems so much better, especially since it's a cheap one. The only obvious difference between it and what we have at work is that it has a glossy appearance while the ones at work are kind of flat/matte looking. Anyway, I think it's my old CRT that will be relegated to the closet instead. I guess I just needed to see the right LCD monitor...

I bought my first LCD on the weekend, but I'll be damned if it goes anywhere near my photo editing PC

I've got 2 second hand 19inch CRT's, and both work perfectly.
There is very little that can go wrong with them, from my experience they either work, or they don't (really old ones do go dark with age, and can gather a colour shift).
As long as you can view it before buying, I wouldn't worry about buying second hand. If you really hunt around you might even find a free one.
One of mine came from a back up call centre, so in 3 years had only ever been turned on half a dozen times. It was destined for the rubbish, so it was also free.

Hey Lonnie, thanks for jumping in. I guess we get lucky once in awhile !
I think I am sticking with the CRT, I know I have been happy with this cheap one until now.
I almost bought the DELL Ultra Sharp 2007wfp but now I am reading bad reviews. Not just one but many.

Moppie, sorry don't know your name, I don't think I will get lucky and find a used one around here in the small town. I am looking at the NEC Accusync 120 and it seems to have the right specs. .22 dot pitch seems to be pretty good and it is a 1600 x 1200 res and I am reading a higher one just causes trouble.

Moppie might as well be my real name
1600x1200 is heads of resolution, yes anything more can cause problems, as many graphics card can't surport more than 1200 pixels high.
My 8800GT for example will only goto about 3600x1200 so my two monitors running at 1600x1200 is getting close to its max, and it is a pretty high end graphics card.

I use a LaCie Electron Blue 22" I bought used.
It's still going strong, and easily as good or better as an LCD (LaCie 321 or so)

If this one gives out, I'll probably try to buy another used CRT.

Next step up would be a LaCie 324 or Eizo DG222W: $$$$
