Is the canon 50mm f/1.8 worth the difference in price from the f/1.4? I'd like to to photojournalistic type pictures of children and family, now as a hobby but as a business later.

The 50mm f/1.8 is a nice lens, I had one- but the autofocus speed and ability to focus in lower light was not acceptable to me. Having the f/1.4 version or a 85mm with USM would really be alot nicer to use. I think the 50mm f/1.8 is fine as a hobby lens, but if you need to make money with it not really one I would count on.

I'm not basing this on the aperture but purely on AF abilities and build quality.

I had the 1.8 then upgraded to the 1.4. In my eyes the 1.4 is worth the money over the 1.8 but the 1.8 is still exceptional value for money. If your budget reaches to the 1.4 I'd go for that.

A proper MF ring, (much) more accurate AF at narrow apertures, about the same sharpness from 1.8 upwards, better build in general..

This is one of the most discussed topics on POTN. The 50 F1.8 is good value, but the AF isn't great, so if you want to shoot wide open make sure you take a few shots. If you can't afford the time to take a few shots (eg shooting professionally) get the 50 F1.4, which has much better USM focusing.

The f/1.8 is a great lens even at 3 times the price! In fact, for the price, I think it's a lens that everyone should have in their gadget bag :D. The way I look at it is this...considering how affordable this lens is, I'd suggest getting one and then if your really not happy with it you can always get the more expensive one later.

Peace,
Jim

USM lens you may not notice the horrid af on the 1.8. Also if you don't do any action shots or lowlight shots you won't notice the af either.

I'm happy with the pictures I get from my 1.8, but if I had to do it again I'd save for the 1.4

I've had both...got EXCELLENT pics from my 1.8...but it was clunky and annoying...upgraded to the 1.4 and love it...but, if you're on a budget and willing to make a few sacrifices for a cheap, sharp lens, the 1.8 will make you happy :)
