Is the canon 50mm f/1.8 worth the difference in price from the f/1.4? I'd like to to photojournalistic type pictures of children and family, now as a hobby but as a business later.

Having the f/1.4 version or a 85mm with USM would really be alot nicer to use. I think the 50mm f/1.8 is fine as a hobby lens, but if you need to make money with it not really one I would count on. In my eyes the 1.4 is worth the money over the 1.8 but the 1.8 is still exceptional value for money. If your budget reaches to the 1.4 I'd go for that. Gear Listhttp://www.codastudios.com.au

The 50 F1.8 is good value, but the AF isn't great, so if you want to shoot wide open make sure you take a few shots. If you can't afford the time to take a few shots (eg shooting professionally) get the 50 F1.4, which has much better USM focusing. In fact, for the price, I think it's a lens that everyone should have in their gadget bag "It is horrifying that we have to fight our own government to save the environment. " - Ansel Adams

Also if you don't do any action shots or lowlight shots you won't notice the af either. 5D3 | Sigma 30mm f/1.4 HSM | EF 85mm f/1.8 USM | EF 24-70 f/2.8L II | EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II | 430EX | YN-568EX II | YN-622c | YN-622-TX |
