Hey everyone. Savannah is actually a stop-over for our trip to Hilton head, but I have a good solid day in Savannah and I wanted to try to get some nice shots. I will be there for both night and day so was thinking of sunrise/sunset shots. Anyone have any ideas? I've never been to the Georgia coast so I am really anxious to see something besides the waving grass of Kansas!

If anyone has any input for Hilton Head as well, that would be greatly appreciated! Thanks everyone!

I never been there, but I would like to go take some pictures of the fort Pulaski.

Two things I'd say you shouldn't miss in Savannah:

-River Street

-The two dozen or so small parks/city squares (external link) that dot the historic center of the city.

... within walking distance from each other (mostly).

As mentioned River street and city market would be a good start. You also have Tybee Island about 20 min's out with the light house and Fort pulaski and Fort Jackson are on the way. There is also a little zoo/wildlife area on the way to Tybee as well on Oatland island.

As far as HHI, stay away, lol.... J/k HHI isn't really all that bad, if you want to go to the beach just stay on 278 and take it all the way to the first traffic circle and then take the 3rd exit. That will put you on Pope Ave, follow it all the way down and you will be at North and South Forrest beach. Not as much to do on HHI as there is in Savannah but if you go into Seapines Plantation you can hit Harbor Town and go up in the light house and over look the Intercoastal.

When are you planning to be down here? I work in Savannah and live about 35-45 min's from HHI. If I can help with anything just let me know.

If you are going to walk on thin ice you might as well dance!

Thanks everyone for your responses. I hope get some great shots! I'll be staying near Harbor Town when in Hilton Head. We're actually heading out tomorrow and will be in Jacksonville first, then drive to Savannah for the night. I'll resurrect this thread when I get back and share some of the shots that I get. Thanks guys!

A couple of other ideas:

The Cross Island Parkway bridge - can't stop your car, but there is a bike path - you can walk or ride to the center. Great at sunset or sunrise

In Sea Pines - N & S Calibogue Cay Rd - there used to be a couple of empty lots that you can see Calibogue Sound at sunset

If you are in to birds, you might try to find a marsh cruise

Savannah - Along the river as others have mentioned. Also numerous streets just in from the river. There is a whole series of squares - lots of great old houses & live oak trees.

Enjoy - HHI is one of my favorite places

River street is pretty neat. Should get some unique shots there.

Savannah is cool. Hilton Head...well if you like brown buildings that all look alike, Hilton Head is the place for you.

Drive another hour and visit us in Beaufort. We have buildings that are more than 30 years old.

We did Savannah's river walk today. It was ok, but very short and somewhat touristy.

We'll discuss Beaufort, I'm thinking we might make the drive. There's lots of parks here my wife wants to check out.
