Been reading a lot on the strobist blog and planetneil, learning everything that I can about lighting and such. This past Sunday night I had my first chance to test everything out. Found a model that was looking to try modeling and asked her if she wanted to give it a go. Explained to her that I was new at this as well so I think that eased the expectations a bit. It was easy to see that she was really nervous and a little self conscience but I think she did really well. There were some rookie mistakes that I made like forgetting I could adjust the ISO...(I was nervous too). Definitely need help with posing as that was really strange to me. All in all I think I got some good workable results. I did a quick PP to these but before I dig into the more extension processing, I wanted to get some feedback from everyone here. Using my 30D, 430EX on bracket with homemade stofen type diffuser, 45" white umbrella with old Vivitar 2800-D flash wireless triggered. EXIF data for all images should be intact.

EDIT: Forgot to add...Full gallery can be viewed here: http://www.fixedfocus.us/images/kaela/ (external link)

Thanks...

She's cute, and it looks like you did pretty well for your first time (I haven't gotten to play with off camera lighting yet, so I'm just going by what I've seen)....

The only thing that I see is in number 4, her head looks a little bit bigger and out of proportion with her body.

I think the 2nd one is my favorite though.

Did you do any pp on them? Just curious.

the second set looks better to me; the first set appears a bit flat.

Awesome job - for your first time you did great! Most of these just need a little skin touch-up.

2, 3, 5, 6, and 8 are better shots to me.

Thanks, The skin touch up is where I am diving into new territory, I am trying to keep everything in lightroom2 so still learning all the tools. I am native to photoshop but resisting that part at the moment.

Looking back I wish I had my 430EX off camera with an umbrella/softbox as well. I think the lighting would have been better and not so flat in some of the shots. Any way to fudge that in PP?

#4 - Thats what 17mm gives you... I thought the same thing but something about the shot makes me like it. I love this lens though...

The PP I have done so far is minor exposure adjustments, cropping, some saturation and a little noise reduction.

i like her outfit in 3 and 4 and also her shirt in the last one...but those shorts don't really fit with the outfit. overall, looks like you had fun with her and got some nice pictures. a little skin touch-up is necessary though, as mentioned...especially because she looks sweaty and so her skin is shiny in some. i think you should also think about dialing your flash down a little bit because sometimes it is harsh.

I can't C&C technique, because I am learning and don't know...but as a viewer...the hanger straps sticking out of the shirt on a couple of the pics distracted me...

Good start!
The only major thing I see is her front leg looks like it was amputated at the knee in #2.

Other than the folded leg in #2, I think you did an excellent job.
