What would be the interest level of running some G-Series Forum-based photography challenges on a regular basis? Anyone that has a G-series camera and uses this forum on a regular basis would be eligible for submissions. I think that the potential for learning how to better use your G-series equipment (especially with our newest memebers) would be significant. These "mini-challenges" work very well on other forums and I don't know why they wouldn't here. Let me know what your thoughts are on this topic - the logistics of how to handle the pics is something that we can talk about if there seems to be enough interest.

Thanks!

I like the idea, even though I don't have a G series (yet), I still think it would be great to see what people can produce. Also, those mini series give good ideas for pictures when you have no other ones.

I think it'd be fun, and might just inspire some more posts in this forum.

Even though the G-series cameras shoot in 4:3 aspect ratio, there are times that a different ratio can enhance the photograph. In this case, you might try the standard film 3:2 ratio, beginning in the top left corner. All you're cutting out is snow and there's still plenty of that left. Plus, people might think you have a DSLR :)

Nice photo. Stay warm...

Don

fantastic suggestion.....I never would have thought of that. Isnt 2:3 closer to the golden section in proportion? just a thought.

Am I correct that this is done in post processing, rather than in camera.....I dont see a setting for aspect ratio.

Yes, definitely in post-processing. There are also other classic ratios: 1:1 for that square look, and 4:5 which makes perfect 8x10 prints.

Cheers,

Don

Just to steer the discussion a little back towards the photo challenges - do we think that posting the entries in a thread like this would work - or do you think that we should use an external gallery where pictures for each challenge could be posted? I think that either could work - just depends on what we think would be best. I have a good relationship with the owner of a photosharing site and he may be willing to give us a "challenge" account to use if we wanted to........just a thought....

Let me know what you think.

You made a comment in your initial post -- "I think that the potential for learning how to better use your G-series equipment (especially with our newest memebers) would be significant" -- and I'm thinking that keeping people in this forum might achieve that goal a little better, rather than taking it outside.

But as you said, either would work. My apologies, by the way, for my contribution to the topic detour. I would erase my messages but that wouldn't contribute much restoring order, so I'll leave them. :)

Cheers,

Don
