Never use a grip with my 40D, just too much extra weight and size with no real benefits for me. I do use a flash handle bracket sometimes, much smaller, lighter, cost less and extends the flash above the camera when required.

Suggestions welcome.

I think you will be used to the grip, not just the larger size. I usually carry my camera by the bottom of the grip so I wouldn't be surprised if I where to drop my camera if I didn't have the grip on there.

I was just lucky enough to be able to use my grip from my 20D.

Mine's gripped all the time, and I walk around with it like that. You get used to it fast!

I don't have one on my 40D and don't see the fascination with grips. I shoot quite a bit, vertically, btw. I would imagine it would be more comfortable with one. I should try one out, first, if I can.

If you know someone with it try it!

I have been getting used to shooting with my 70-200 with the grip over the years. If I take the grip off and try, I can't seem to balance the camera/lens very well.

Even with a short lens, like the 17-40, it just feels right.

sjlund,

You may find this recent discussion of the 40D grip useful: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=542363.

Personally, I don't need the grip, but when shooting vertical shots with a telephoto and flash attached, it is far more comfortable.

I use the grip all the time. I had one on the xTi since original purchase and ddid the same when I upgraded to the 40D.

I have large hands, so the 40D feels small in my hands without the grip (my XT, meanwhile, feels almost microsopic, haha). My grip is always on because I also use a hand strap, and I like the ability to more comfortably shoot in the vertical plane.

I didn't realize (reading on another thread) that there is no AF-ON button on the grip... ok... I would find a grip a step backward.

Sounds like the general consensus is that I could probably pick up a grip at a later date if I decided I wanted the vertical controls, but as far as general usability it's not as big a deal as with the XTi. Thanks for the advice!

This pretty much summarize my opinion too..

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

I have CF IV-1 set to 3 and CF IV-2 set to 1.
This puts the focus on the * button (for both the grip and the body). :D

It all depends on the size of your hands. If you have fat sausage sized digits, a grip is pretty much vital. However, if you have quite small hands like me, a gripped 40D sized camera is just far too much of a handful. I felt like I was constantly struggling to reach all the buttons and trying to get a good hold of the camera.

Went straight back to Amazon the next day...

I didnt ordered grip when i was ordered 40D, because last time when i had rebel the grip always with my camera body which makes me lazy to carry it because too heavy. I didnt order Grip party because ive sold my 70-200IS & 16-35, with primes i dunt think i need grip.

To be honest 40D without grip feels so much comfy compare to xxxD bodies without grip
