Ok so I'm putting some new crop tools to use. How does the composition of this image look/feel on a viseral level? I am looking for gut instinct, not approval after checking the lines :)

Ok, gut feeling: the open sky and water on the left don't entirely balance the concrete jungle on the right.

Feels a bit right-side heavy to me.

Exactly what I'm looking for. I'm trying to see if I have an understanding of where to place the lines when cropping (I think I do), and how much does having your images cropped to those guides really impact the final product.

I will post up the original uncropped version in a bit. It does not follow the rules, but I like it better.

I know rules are meant to be broken and all, so I'm not trying to follow it like a religion or anything. I frame my images the way my eye tells me to frame them anyways. Improving my vision is the next goal :)

I'll take the silence as *yawn*, and post the original before I head home.

Is the original better than the crop?

Yes, the original is better than your first crop, but I would still take in the top and each side just a little, I think (the horizon is too close to the center of the photo for my taste, and the water feels more compelling than the sky here).

Having said that, I'm probably more of an amateur than you ;o)

edit: Also, I just noticed the mass of black at the center/left. I'd take most of the side-to-side crop from the left to get rid of some of that black.

I went with even more "Pano-esque"

I love all the elements, the colors and the mood. It says nice, peaceful summer evening but for some reason, something just doesn't gel...

I really like the original version's framing. Would that be the Plaza of Nations on the right and the Cambie Bridge in the background?

Wow I didn't think there was any interest in this :) Thank you all for your responses and suggestions. I was recently turned onto this "Golden Ratio" method of composition so I figured this image would make a good test subject. The first crop follows the Golden Area framing, while the second is the complete image. Here is the final crop, along with the area marks for the Golden Ratio. Please let me know if I'm missing the point entirely, or if this looks correct.

Bill: You are absolutely correct. PoN and Cambie Bridge :) Although the PoN is now the Edgewater Casino (hence the pretty lights).

LOL I'm not even sure if I get it yet :) It is my understanding that in the Rule of Thirds, and the Golden Section you want your points of interest to be at the intersection of the lines, while using the Golden Ratio (where a perfect rectangle has a ratio of 1:1.618 ) you would want points of interest to be located within the subdivided frames.
