Ed,
have you consider the Acratech V2 ballhead? VERY light and SOLID. I use it with my 600IS all the time.

The main reason i choose Acratech: * I can clean the ball if there is sand/dust stick to it (all surface) since it is wide open. * It can work as Gimbal head. (very helpfull) * Oilless and greaseless ball will not attract or hold dirt and debris. hmmmm....looks interesting. is that the QR that comes with the ballhead? http://instagram.com/edraderphotography/

Why spend extra for brand name when Benro perform the same for half price? I'm willing to spend if it make sense. Some people are swapping the clamp (the part at the top of the head) from the Markins "arca" (vice grip style) to an RRS lever clamp because they prefer the ease of use of a lever release. You don't need to do that in fact I prefer the arca style. Andy Brown; South-east England. Canon, Sigma, Leica, Zeiss all on Canon DSLRs. My hacking blog

You don't need to do that in fact I prefer the arca style. Over and above the Q3 the only part you must buy is an "arca" plate to fit your camera. Markins will sell you one for $49 or you can get one on ebay for about $10 less. The only 'feature' to look for in a standard plate is the lip that prevents the camera from rotating. 'L' plates, as you've discovered are priced way above their material value plus reasonable profit margin and nobody's done any cheap copies. Yet. thank you...i wish i had read your post before starting another thread because you answered my questions. http://instagram.com/edraderphotography/
