So Radiohead is playing in Vancouver in two weeks. It's going to be a great outdoor concert, looking forward to it! Right now I am thinking taking my XSi with me to take some pictures. I know on the ticket it says "No cameras/videos," but I have also seen tons of ppl taking pictures at concerts (esp outdoor ones) with P&S cameras.

My questions are...
1. Has anyone brought in a dSLR into a concert when the tickets say "no cameras or videos"? If so what do you say to the security guards usually?

2. Which lens should I bring, my 18-55 IS Kit lens, or the 50mm F1.8 prime?

Thanks.

I dunno if I'd walk in with a DLSR (without my trusty media pass lol)...

and I'd take the prime...

Just checked out the ticketmaster site.

It says "no professional cameras."

Very vague I have to say. :(

tell them your camera is a consumer cam and you don't consider anything less than a medium format a pro cam ;)

You might be able to get away with a higher end point and shoot, but unlikely that you will get an SLR into the event.

Just so I have a dSLR all of a sudden I'm a professional photographer with a professional camera? That doesn't make any sense at all...

Ugh I wish they have a more detailed description of what's defined as professional cameras...

It's pretty obvious. DSLR's are pretty much considered professional. You can't bring one in. Not sure why it needs to be more descriptive. They won't take your point and shoot camera away, but they will with a DSLR.

I always call the venue. Usually, the big concern is tripods. I have always been allowed in.
When I call, I always get the person's name that I talked to.....
Went to a Blue Man Group concert....they love people taking pictures and I had brought my P&S. Bummer....still got a few good shots.

Just take a P&S and use the flash, you'll get great pictures from the back of the crowd

All those other people flashing away can't be wrong - can they?

The thing is...I no longer have my P&S camera. :(

I'll try calling the venue and see.

I disagree with the whole concept that a dSLR is considering a professional camera. With the price quickly dropping you're seeing more and more ppl switching from P&S to dSLR.

Tell them you are trying to get some good pictures of your fiance, wife, daughter, granddaughter, or some such story. Assure them you will not be bringing in a tripod or monopod. If you have a large lens and it isn't fast, leave it at home.

Without an event pass you are really at the mercy of the security people, either at the door or in the scene, with anything besides a basic point and shoot.

My daughter was at a concert in Seattle a year or two ago with an S3 IS, and was stopped from taking pictures because it was too "professional". Photogs have no rights to assume in these venues.

I took my wife to see Dave Mathews in concert last summer and the tickets said no cameras. At the gate, I overheard the security guard telling someone that cameras were allowed as long as the camera didn't have a removable lens. Once inside there were tons of P&S cameras but I never saw a single DSLR.

it doesn't matter what you think of a camera and it's categorization, it all depends on what the venue/band/PR firm does...
