It really depends on the venue. I saw Radiohead in Victoria Park, London in June. Lots of 400d / 450d where being used.

The ticket did say no professional cameras. Which I think translates as no white lenses ;)

it doesn't matter what you think of a camera and it's categorization, it all depends on what the venue/band/PR firm does...

Yep!
Unless you are waay up front ( and, sometimes, at really big open air things the very front is enclosed for guests) it won't be worth the stress of either being turned away or your camera being damaged by an over enthusiastic drunk. I'd leave it at home and have a great time.

Tell them you are trying to get some good pictures of your fiance, wife, daughter, granddaughter, or some such story. Assure them you will not be bringing in a tripod or monopod. If you have a large lens and it isn't fast, leave it at home.

I'm really only to plan to take pics of my friends and I in the concert and some pictures of the band playing. Won't be bringing a tripod or a monopod. Don't have a white lens. :p

Hopefully Canon will improve the G series to the point where high ISO's are useable for just such occasions.

the G9 should be fine, no? at big shows, i'd imagine that ISO 400 or 800 should be fine.

Well, I seem to remember a line of advanced P&S cameras, maybe by Panasonic or Fuji, that claim to have good high ISO performance, but I'm dubious...

I'd say, though, that if someone wanted to design a break-through compact fixed-lens lineup, they might look at using the 4:3 sensor with at least a constant f/2.8 zoom, although f/2 would be sweeter in these venues.
