I've never really understood why it's ok to reveal the breast but not the nipple. Why are people so afraid of nipples?

That's an excellent question. I wish I had an answer. Frankly, I don't understand why people are concerned about any part of the human body.

It has to do with the way the brain identifies the tit as a primary sexual characteristic. Without the nipple the brain is lost... unless you develop a swimsuit fetish.

I'll shut up.

Odd dichotomy here...among primates the human is the only one that has enlarged breasts all of the time, rather than only at the time of readiness for mating (and the later feeding of resultant offspring). So while its primary purpose is that of providing nutrition to newborn offspring, it has a secondary role in externally signaling sexual readiness probably because the human olfactory system is largely non-functional in detecting sexual phermones which signal sexual readiness to all other animals and insects!

Oddly, the Brits went from a socially healthy attitude -- clothing which deliberately bared the female breast was common in Elizabethan times -- to a very socially repressed attitude created in the Victorian times when even clothed ankles were scandlous! And remnants of that attitude persist in the former British colonies as well as the homeland.

So now we have nude photography as an offshoot of that attitude, to bring us back to photographic topics!

This bit from David Bell's response to the article seems to sum up the problems with this case ;

We have laws on child porn which encompass models old enough to lawfully marry, which we have been told are meant to catch really bad people, and they get applied to this. What startles me is that the photographer, Dr Marcus Phillips, is in court, yet apparently the parents, who gave permission and, you report, were present when the photographs were taken, have not been charged.

Was this case to protect children, or was it brought to scare photographers, who seem to be the target for so much official and quasi-official suspicion?

I thought in US the women are allowed to be topless because of the gender equality thing? No?

Yet at the same time, some airline flight attendants (female ones) had a female passenger ejected from the flight (fortunately they were not yet in flight!) for breast feeding her infant!

Now there are laws to protect their right to breast feed.

Ok Ok, Think you're all getting a bit off-topic!?! Anyone know the precise law and the interpretation applied? I do wonder if it's something to do with the creation of psuedo-images, but then just about anyone can do that! IMO it does seem very heavy handed and I'd be surprised if he doesn't get a top counsel/ QC involved and appeal. I also agree that if the photographer is guilty of contravening the law then the parents must also be prosecuted. I'm no lawyer but I don't see why they should escape prosecution. As any lawyer, police officer, politician or pub wag, will tell you: 'ignorance of the law is no excuse!'
I'm off to check out the BJP and AP sites, to see what their saying - if anything.

Try this one on for size.....

You see a woman breastfeeding in the park, so you slam off a couple frames, and she screams for a cop, who shows up, right on cue......

Where do you think THAT's headed?????

Me either, for god sake, it's skin, and some tissue...unless they are aggressivly after you to get it on or hurt you in some way....WTF? what's the big deal, expect most prosecutors and police are prudes and love to pit themselves against the "badguy".

As they see it.

I believe it was one of the Carolina states a few years back that passed a law that stated something like 'A woman on a public beach must have at least 3/4 of the breast & buttocks covered'. Would that mean that she could have one breast & both cheeks covered, leaving one breast completely bare?

Human is the only primate without a mating season. We can mate year round and theoretically "any time, any place", similar to bunnies. That's one of the reasons for the development of civilzation as we know it.

All of the other primates have specifically signaled mating cycles and will not mate most of the year. This is why it presents a specific challenge for the zoos and to get an offspring is considered an achievement for the zookeepers.
