This is the first time i've posted a picture so please critique. I'm thinking the background is a bit blury, but i like the way she pops out, what do you think? Also I did a bit of pp... do you think I over did it?

Her eye's seem just on the edge of acceptable sharpness...I would like it better if the point of focus were her eye's. But this would have required a larger aperture to keep the top of her head in focus as well. Overall I would say......CUTE!

yeah, it seems i focused on the hair (or my af did!)... I was aiming for in between the eyes so not sure what happened there.

I like it. Good job, sometimes getting lucky is the best result.

You must have your AF selection set to auto. If you take it out and set it to the point you want it to focus on that would solve the problem.

The AF selection goes for the maximum contrast which would have been the hair line and the skin. Or possibly the highlights in her hair and the dark areas in front.

The blurred background is a Depth of Field outcome, which is probably what you wanted in this picture. You want her to be the focus of attention. Read about your F-stop or Aperture to see why it did what it did.

i had the af set to the bottom left corner and tried to centre on the bridge of her nose but must have missed. Also I have a beginners idea of how aperture etc works, and I wanted it blury (hence I bought the 50mm 1.8!) but I thought it might be too blury.

many thanks for your comments, they really help with my learning.

Nah, its either blurry or it isn't. I don't know if the degree matters.

But just to make sure, out of focus isn't "blur" that's just bad technique. :-)
