A few shots from the skate park. Very new to action shots.

I'd apprecaite any recommendations for framing and making things interesting, etc. C&C welcome! :)

#4 is a bit orange. ;)

Seriously, I like #4 the best, but not in the orange. Try the original or b&w.

It's risky, but with skating what isn't? Get the flash off of your camera and set up somewhere with a good angle on the trick (I usually have a board protecting the base of the stand). Two flashes work well, but a lot can be done with just one. Meter as best you can for the diminishing light with the highest shutter speed and then just play. I've seen shots with the flash in and out of frame work. Quick note of caution: even with a board at the bottom of a light stand, it can still take a beating. Always best to have someone standing by to help watch over your equipment.

Why yes, I DO shoot people—and they pay me well for it.:D

For #1 & #2, try to loosen up the comp a bit.
I personally would get that whole piece ( is there a name for a pyramid with a hubba and a rail at one end? ) in the frame and get lower to isolate the skater in the sky. Your a little early on the timing on the grinds but its nothing really to worry about.

What setup were you using on #3?
I like the telephoto feel to it.

I really like #1, but I think it would look better with the rider centred in the frame.

#4 is a great choice to use the kind of PP you selected.

Great shots!

I love the lighting and colors in your shots, very nice. Something that was recommended to me by a friend who has been skating for years and specialized in shooting skate videos, was to always try to get the obstacle the trick is being done on in the frame. Not just a piece of it, but the whole thing, to show the length and/or height. It creates a feeling of drama and can add a lot of difficulty to a trick being performed.

Nice work and keep at it.

Thanks for the feedback and the advice everyone! All great stuff.

I shot 1 and 2 with the kit 17-85 mm and 3 and 4 with the 70-300 mm.
Now that I am looking at them again, I guess 2 and 3 can really benefit from a zoom out.

dshootist, yeah it is dangerous. I had a board bounce off my shin. Yikes! It hurt!!

Thanks again for your comments.

Or when it does take out your $400 flash and you get to just stand there and watch it all happen in slow motion...

Good job!

I like #3 most of all and although I agree with a zoom-out a bunch more, I really like the QUALITY of the image itself...Exposure looks spot-on and its SHARP...Good job, again!:)
