I had an Epson and it worked well. But in the end I sold it and picked up a used small Sony Vaio laptop with an 11" screen for about the same price. Faster, 4 times the storage, the 11" screen is actually useful for making quality decisions, I can fire up Lightroom or PS if needed, and it sends mails, browses the internet, etc. Its bigger, but far more useful in the field than the Epson it replaced.

that's the rub....bigger.

and the places i would use the epson there may not be net access :D. still, i will eventually get a small laptop.

yeah if i sold my p3000 i'd probably let it go for about $350 and it comes with an extra battery and a travel charger, as well as the original HD :D.

Notes
  • NTSC or PAL
Connects to television, monitor or projector with video input using optional, third-party, audio/video cable (sold separately)
  • Connectable USB Device
    PCs (as USB device)
    PCs (as USB display)
DSC, USB memory, HDD, CD/DVD drive (as USB host)
  • Faster Download Speed
Up to 35% faster based on backup speeds of CompactFlash and Secure Digital memory cards

From the notes on the site it looks like the newer models do a few thing the others didnt. Plus 35% faster downloaded and longer battery life.

It looks like the new units dont do DIVX though

anyone tried a larger hdd in the p-3000? like the samsung 500gb? just out of interest.. or even a 320 or 250gb? i'm assuming you can, but i haven't read of anyone going larger than 120gb so thought there might be a reason for it.

i'm currently trying to make the big decision of which psd's to get, and i plan on getting 2 different ones for double-backup and extra storage so i can free up limited CF cards..

they'll be used in upcoming trip to Nepal plus future trips.. i like camping/hiking and can be without power and computers for days so these should come in handy..

looking at a nexto or hyperdrive for a non-viewer, and maybe a epson or vosonic 8860 or colorspace-o for a viewer..

decisions decisions

1) my epson p3000 weighs about 1 lb and is smaller that a notebook.

2) i can buy extra batteries for my epson for about $10 each and a travel charger for about $20...if you don't have AC power you might be hosed with the laptop.

your question is a good one tho if i knew that a netbook could take the place of my laptop and my epson i'd get one in a heartbeat and get rid of the other two.
