Your camera looks at the rest of the scene (even with spot metering this can happen) and thinks "oh, that must be shadow, I'm sure the mid tones are what you're trying to capture". So you end up with under exposed pictures. Or the camera tries to expose for the dark skin, and ends up making everything else blown out. And then the shadows on dark skin are much harder to get rid of than pale skin without using flash. The solution? Use flash. At least that's the only solution I've found.
