I find the skin easier actually, specially in close ups since its hard to blow it out with light. The only thing I have to do different is when using a flash it has to be a lot more diffused or bounced completely.

Did you add in the gold color? or is that how you took the picture?

It's nice, but I wonder if it wouldn't be nicer in B&W. I think her eyes are awesome and would really come out nicely with a edgy contrast black and white

B&w has contours and shadows...greyscale lies flat.you can play with the saturation levels in this ..

The gold sepia needs more contrast, I much prefer the BW.

Ebony skin is hard to photograph for a couple reasons. Your camera looks at the rest of the scene (even with spot metering this can happen) and thinks "oh, that must be shadow, I'm sure the mid tones are what you're trying to capture". So you end up with under exposed pictures. Or the camera tries to expose for the dark skin, and ends up making everything else blown out. And then the shadows on dark skin are much harder to get rid of than pale skin without using flash. The solution? Use flash. At least that's the only solution I've found.

As for the picture you've posted, I think it's great.

Just darkening and upping the contrast.
