Hi,

I was wondering what the difference is between a Canon battery and the cheaper ones.

For me a BG-N whatever costs say £50 and i see that i can get universal ones for a lot cheaper.

Wise move or not?

I am going away for 3 weeks where i won't be able to charge my battery so would you get 2 more Canon ones or multiple universal ones?

Thanks

Ian

There is a big sticky at the top, the bottom line is that you should buy 3rd party batteries from well-established businesses, like EForcity, Sterlingtek, Diamond, etc. Some people have heartburn over 3rd party batteries, but in all reality there are just a handful of places where batteries are even manufactured, it is almost always just the branding that is different. Takes me back to the days when I used to pack pretzels, different brand rolls of plastic, same pretzels...

Many people on here use Sterlingtek batteries and other aftermarkets; as TeamSpeed said, the sticky is a great place to start.

Over the past couple of years I have purchased spares from Sterlingtek for use in my Rebel XT, G9 and most recently my new 40D. I just returned from two weeks in Alaska and all batteries performed fine. I am very satisfied with my Sterlingtek batteries; I have no difficulty recommending them. If you can't recharge while away; you may need more than two additional batteries depending on your expected shot count. If this is a "once in a life-time" type trip you should consider 3 or 4 especially given the Sterlingtek (or Diamond) prices.

Go for it.

I've had such good luck with 3rd party (aka: gobs cheaper) batteries that I wish Canon offered their Camera bodies sans battery & knocked off $50 or so. . .

The Sterlingtek battery works great for me and I can't tell the difference between the Sterlingtek and the Canon battery.
