to trigger my 580II? I just think pocket wizards are way to over priced for what it is.

The cheapest way would be to just mount the flash in the hotshoe of your camera.

Yes like that. The alienbees cybersync are the next one up after that.

The cheapest one though is just a long sync cable (wired).

yes, works with any camera with a hot shoe flash mount. some of the ebay triggers are actually cheaper than cords but going wired means it's going to perform 100% of the time. pocketwizards are near 100% but cost a lot more.

just realized you said sync cable which would only work with the 580ex II since it's the only canon flash with a sync port. camera body doesn't matter but you lose ETTL hooking it up this way. if you want to keep ETTL you need to use a hot shoe to hot shoe.

You could get a 2nd 580EX and use it in wireless mode. See the "wireless" chapter in your current 580EX manual.
