Okay, maybe the subject has been covered many times, but I want to protect my lenses. In the past my local seller has recommended B+W F-Pro UV filters to protect the lens, since I is high quality and does not distort too much the white color, compared to other manufacturers.
So I have such a protector on my 17-70.
Now, another salesman tells me that i'm better with B+W Clear filter, which isn't a filtre, but a high quality glass protector that doesn't distort the whites at all, since it is only a glass that protects the lens, without filtering on any sort. He says that with digital sensors, UV filtering is not as important anymore, compared to film cameras.
I have to buy such protectors for my 70-300IS, 55-250IS and 18-55IS, which are all 58mm, so it is money well spent to buy one or two of these. Should I buy the UV filter or the clear glass ? Both tele zooms are used mostly outdoors, and I don't know if i'll ever use the 18-55IS since I already have the Sigma 17-70 which is a faster lens. I bought the 18-55IS and 55-250IS because they were bundled with my new Canon XSi, I wanted to buy the XSi body only but the price difference was ridiculous: for 206$ more, I got both lenses (XSi Body only 650$, XSi with 18-55IS AND 55-250IS 856$).
So which filters/protectors should I use ?

I went with the clear filters from Hoya and have been happy with them. Before I had no filters for protection because I didn't want to risk the problems some UV filters can cause with image quality. Hoya stresses in their literature that these clear filters are designed only for protection of the front element and do not affect image quality, something they don't claim with their UV filters.

I haven't been able to tell any difference between unfiltered and filtered photos I've taken with the clear filters.

As digital cameras are not sensitive to UV the clear ones are fine. As a UV won't be filtering any thing that matters to a sensor, they will be equally good.
I have UV ones but that is not really necessary. But It does no harm.

I am just concerned about the very slight yellowish tint that all UV filters have, even the finest (although i've compared many and the B+W F-Pro has les that problem than let's say a regular Tiffen or Hoya filter)
