Another ERROR 02?

I have a Canon EOS Digital Rebel that's a couple of years old and seldom used. I took out the other day to take some pics and all I got was ERROR 02 on the display. If I took out the CF card it would start up like normal and just inform me that "no CF card" was installed.

Get back the the house and google the error and I found links probably from here saying to reformat the card. So I pull out the card reader transferred my images to file, deleted CF contents and re-formatted the card via Windows. Tried FAT 16 & 32 with no joy. Tried another CF card and again no joy. Went out a bought a new Sandisk 2gig and the still got ERROR 02.

Did some more surfing and found a statement that said this could be caused by a week battery and although I charged the battery until the charger indicated 100% I figured since most rechargeable batteries are onlky good for a few years before full charge capacity is half of what it was new I figured I'll get a new one. So I went back the the store nd bought a new battery, charged it completely and again ERROR 02 with the new card, the old card and the older card. All but the new re-formatted.

So I then figured I'd search for a possible firmware update and see if that would make this camera work again. I found the firmware but was bumbed when I realized I couldn't load it unless the camera was on and the camera won't turn on with the CF card installed, so I removed it, connected the USB cable and initialize the transfer and then it tells me I can't transfer the firmware because I have no CF card installed. Catch 22. So I'm screwed.

Search for more answer and found another statement that said if the camera doesn't turn on with a flash card installed it needs servicing and at this point I think I'm out of options any way so I bring it the the camera shop hand them $25 so they can send it to the nearest autorized Canon service center and waited for their evaluation. I got the call (answering machine) today from the camera shop owner who said it would cost $350.00 for the repair. Now brand new this was only $650.00 and again this was in almost new condition and rarely used.

Are there any other avenues I could try to get this to work? I thinking it's not worth the repair when I can get a 12.2 MP camera body for double the repair cost since I already have lenses which I'll assume for now are compatable. On the other hand I'm not to happy with Canon right now as this was my first digital and first canon and in the mint condition this camera was in it should have lasted for much, much longer. Besides what are they goiing to do for the repiar, just replace the internal flash card with a new card and image? Should I just go back to Nikon or something else.

At this point I'm thinking screw canon but I have lenses. Since this is clearly a design flaw, that is, unless it's not designed to sit in a comfortable case where it's kept safe and warm for extended periods of time but if it isn't why would I want another?

Any thoughts or suggestions?
