My wife will be over in San Francisco in the next month or two and I'm quite keen on her buying a few duty free "essentials" for me, such as a 580 flash, perhaps a lens (or two!) etc. ;)

So I was just wondering if any of you might be able to recommend any good camera stores in the San Francisco area (preferably in the city itself) that offer good prices on Canon gear.

Any help appreciated!

Cheers,

JK

What's the weather like in Perth at the moment? I'm just about to book our tickets, arriving Perth November 1st - can't wait :-)

I'm sure someone will come up with a better answer than this, but I'll throw it out anyway.

About 25 miles south of San Francisco in Palo Alto is a store called Keeble & Shuchat. http://www.kspphoto.com/ (external link)

They actually have two stores directly across the street from each other. One is digital only, and the other is film & accessories.

They have good inventory, but their prices are only so-so.

There used to be a very fine camera store in San Francisco---Denevi Camera. They were absorbed into the Ritz/Kit's/Wolfe camera chain. So much for them.

If you decide to go to Palo Alto, it's about a 45-minute drive from downtown San Francisco. Palo Alto is the home of Stanford University FWIW and is really the northernmost outpost of Silicon Valley..

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

Well, it's going to be a bit warmer tomorrow - 40 degrees C is the forecast (104 F) so it's time to hit the beach! ;)

Uh, and thanks to everyone for the info so far!

i'm flying to sfo next weekend. i've found Gasser's in the city is pretty good, and as already mentioned, Keeble and Shuchat. although they're in palo alto, it's actually easy to get there - take the muni to the caltrain depot and then take the train down to the california stop. it's like 5 minutes walking time from there...good it's nice out west - we've had so so weather this summer - it's 5am and the lightning has awoken my daughter

I purchased a 20D and a few other items at Discount Camera near Union Square. Try this link to get an idea of their inventory. Alan was very helpful.

Jk,
San Francisco is a great place and I seriously advise you to search and know your prices before you go to USA. My lack of knowledge cost me dearly and if you visit the Best camera shop of San Francisco union square on the web and read the reviews it will come clearer to you and enable you to have a fighting chance in a doddy dog world !!!
Regards Mike

Is she visiting somebody? I would just order online from Amazon/B&H/Adorama/Abe's and have it shipped to that address.

edit: Holy 2005 necrothread!

I live in the bay area. Don't feel like you would get a bargain, price wise.
In addition to Keeble in Palo Alto and Gassers in San Francisco ( I have not been there in years), there's Calumet in Bryant Street in San Francisco.
There's also San Jose Camera in San Jose.

I would think that whatever gear was being sought has long been sold and resold by now.
