I was happy. :) I attempted to look it up, on bugguide.net...but can't figure out it's species.

1. Apologies about the noise...this is just a 100% cropper, untouched.

2 - Sitting on my jeans...

LOvely captures - can only say it's a species of darter dragonfly - or that's what they are called in the UK.

Thanks Brian, apprecaite the comments. I'll look up darters. How does one tell the difference, b/w variants? Are there specific distinguishing marks, etc? I guess you'd be the one to ask...hehe... :)

I'm assuming that was taken with the 50mm f/2.5 macro? Great shot and the close up of the eye is amazing. Every dragon fly I've come across around here buggers off at the sight of me, never can say I've had one land on my jeans.

Hope you don't mind, but while we're talking about Dragon Flies, here's my first one too, taken with the 18-55 IS kit lens.

Thanks all, I appreciate it. I'm just glad I have the time to be calm, and patient when out there.

gcc...it was taken with the 100mm macro. I have larger versions, but 2 and three are basically just resized, for the web. Number one is a 100% crop, untouched (except for crop, and size).

well #1 reminds me of why I want the 100mm macro...that is a crazy sharp lens with great contrast. I don't think I've seen a bad shot from that lens yet.

I'd never give mine up...unless it was to fund a MPE-65...and even then, I don't believe I'd give it up. The MPE takes some time to master...and I'd take it with the shakes, I'd need a serious focusing rail...which is an extra 'accessory' that would have to go along with the lens.

The 100 I have is definately a keeper, though. Oh, and all these were handheld.

Thanks Adam. Appreciate the comments...and yeah, the lens takes a bit of practice, but, out of the box, I'm sure it's much easier to deal with than the MPE. Maybe I'll acquire one in the future...

Lovely shots - I like the last one best :D

You might try googling for dragonflies in your country first, then maybe look up something like 'dashers' - they are called different things in other countries.

Yes, lots of different things to look for to positively ID, things like shape and size (obviously), colour, markings on the thorax top and sides ie stripes, dots, that sort of thing, colour of wings, looking also at any colours at base of wings and what the dots are like at the end of the wings (these are called 'pterostigma'). Basically, lots of things to look at so have fun
