I am sure this has been covered somewhere before but I can't seem to find anything. How many use both CF & SD in their cameras on a regular basis? I am thinking about getting a couple of 8GB SDHC Extreme III's to backup my 4GB CF IV's in my MKII's shooting RAW to both cards. Opinions?

In my MKIIN, I use both card slots. Sometimes I use one at a time then switch when one is full. At other times, I use one as a backup. It depends on what I'm shooting and why.

I always use both cards in both the MkII and Mk III

Just like Mark,
Normally I use them independently, fill the CF card and if I don;t have time to sap cards, I go on to the SD card.

On occasion I have a paying gig, then I use the two cards together in the built in EOS 1D RAID feature for data protection.

Yup, precisely how I use my dual card slots. The SD slot is also handy if I forget to insert my CF for the next day or something dopey like that.

Me too.

I do also find it handy to have two cards in there as I have at times when in a rush to catch some light or such left the house with a CF card still in the computer after downloading it; no such issues with two cards in the 1D as there's always going to be one still left in it. For paid gigs I obviously go through all the idiot checks so it's not as important but it's nice for those who are absent minded :)

Yup same here. Backup when a useful precaution and fall over any other time.

Very useful feature.

I shoot almost everything in raw. I like to have all the space I can get. I have an 8GB Extreme IV CF and a 4GB Ultra II SD card. I have it configured so it fills the CF first and then the SD. With the price of SD cards (and the fact that you actually paid more to have that function included in the camera) it would seem wasteful not to use that slot.

My standard setup is, 4GB CF recording RAW and a 2GB SD recording the largest and finest JEPG. Why 4GB? Because I can burn the entire file to a DVD. Actually the SD card holds more shots than the CF card. I don't take as many pictures as many do so those cards with like extras always does for me. I also have one 8GB SD just in case but I really don't think "just in case" will ever come. I quickly download the JEPG file and kinda look everything over. Sometimes I PP a picture from there. Sometimes I want more PP control and that is when I can use the DVD back up disc.

Thanks guys, I think I got the answer I already knew. Paying gigs = backup cards. Guess I need to get a couple of SD cards now!

I match each CF with an equal sized SD/SDHC. I use the backup feature when the shots are extremely important, and disable it otherwise. I find that most of the time, I can get away with just the first set of cards since I start with 8GB and work my way down. This reduces the amount of swapping necessary and still provides me with backup protection when applicable.

As for forgetting to replace the cards, that doesn't happen anymore because I leave the door open any time one or both of the slots are empty.

I use both slots. RAWS on the CF and JPEGs on the SD. That way if I dont have time to process then use SD. If I want subject to quickly preview for preferences then I toss them the SD.

I match each CF with an equal sized SD

exactly what I do. I have 5 - 8GB of each.

I write to both unless its a major event and space is premium (like tournaments)
