Car Show Newbie

Just got a D40, and have just been shooting on auto. www.flickr.com/ajsdads​photos. I am going to a car show tomorrow. (a private collection, guy has every corvette convertible ever made. Curious what settings I should be using. I would assume lighting will be poor, but am uncertain. I have a 28-90 lens, & 18-55 as well as a 70-400 that I would think I would leave in the bag.

Settings will be difficult to guess without seeing the amount of light, car colour etc. Best thing is to try shooting wide open, high ISO if needs be and try to shoot wide open when possible. Try and keep your shutterspeed above 1/60 if you can. Leave the 70-400 at home and I would stick with the 18-55 since it will be wide enough if the cars are cramped together. Be good for a nice wide shot of as many as you can get in. Take the 18-55 and the 28-90.

Car shows are pretty much a crapshoot. Best results I've had come from waiting 'till late in the show when (hopefully) the lighting is better & some cars have left giving you more room to shoot. Seen this?
A few Car Lighting Tips - Updated

For evening shows, you just need to hang around late. Even daytime shows can provide an occasional cloud.
Last night, I saw three that I wanted to shoot, talked to the owners for the details, & shot a series. Then I kept an eye on them &, 2 hours later, some cars had left leaving a space next to two of the cars & the light was much better so I reshot them both in about 10 minutes. The difference in the before/after was worth the wait.
