thanks for all the input everyone!!!

tonight i hope to test out this new camera and battery pack....

to me, i wanted the battery pack for the additional time. it seems to make the camera bigger/blukery then i am used to with my Rebel XT, but i guess i will get used to that.

can't wait to see what "my guns" look like after carrying this thing around all day with the 100-400L hanging off the end of it :)

According to the 'manual', the batteries are used simultaneously........​.......:

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: 404 | MIME changed to 'image/gif' | Byte size: ZERO | PHOTOBUCKET ERROR IMAGE

Someone made a comment about using batteries with different amounts of charge together.

This is always bad news, when I replace batteries, I always replace them all (AA's) or recharge both Canon batteries. I also believe its bad news to mix different types, due to differences in internal battery resistances - to the extent that I always stick with only one manufacturer in the grip at any time.

It's not so bad with the Li-Ion BG-511 batteries, not ideal but it shouldn't be dangerous as they have decent internal circuitry to handle that sort of thing but with AA, especially alkaline it more than likely will cause the weakest battery to leak and could cause them to catch fire.
