How does the flash attach securely to this eBay bracket?

The item in question..

The eBay auction (external link)

I'm looking at getting a cheap stand/bracket/umbrella to practice with - its a 580 EXII going on it.

The question: From the image in the auction there does not appear to be a way to securely attach the flash unless it's simply relying on the locking pin?

Can anyone shed some light ?

Regards

Greg.

Why would you buy such a nice flash and try to save such a few bucks on a cheap mount? Sorry, but that doesn't make sense.

Well ultimately the flash ended up at ~£180 so not a "massive" amount.

If that cheap mount really isn't worth it and won't do the job then I'll invest in something stronger (if anyone wants to point a suitable mount out then please do) but if it would then why spend the extra if its not needed?

I have the very same Bracket mount, it's sure don't feel or look cheap. The top has an adjustable plate that locks against the side of the Flash allowing you to move the flash up and down the slide :-)

So you've no concerns about it holding a flash in safely then? Lefturn99's got me worrying about crashes in the background now :)

I still can't see how the top plate secures, ok maybe i'm being paranoid...

Found a UK vendor... eBay link... (external link) looks like the same item but no visible screws to hold the top plates together ?

Aha - another auction!! seems to indicate the screw that tightens it up eBay link (external link) - is this similar to yours ?

Thanks for the confirmations Squigles and Martin - bid placed at a massive amount of £4.49 including a optical slave trigger (that probably won't work on this old spare flash I've got but hey :) )

Time for another chilled beer. Hobgoblin I think.

For what it's worth, I just bought some name brand "Impact" versions of this from B&H for about double the cost of those you link to, and your E-bay ones look (from the picture) a lot better!

A pal paid 4x as much for Callumet ones and ended up buying the ebay ones to replace them after seeing mine as they were better quality.

The optical slaves are very good too, unless you use them outside in bright light. Indoors I've never had a missfire.

Well it turned up.

Pros:
- It's strong enough for me to be happy, seems a "good" build quality

Cons:
- The locking screw for the top plate is a bit fiddly for me, going to get my dad to turn up a larger one on his lathe.
- My 580 EX II doesn't mount properly! The weather sealing hood fouls against the mounting block so it only attaches right at the rear of the block and doesn't grip correctly due to the off centre pivoting. Works fine when attached to an optical slave adaptor but the only one I have is plastic and I don't trust it to hold the weight.

Can anyone (UK side) suggest a strong hotshoe adaptor of some sort (and supplier - I have a damn hard time searching for the right words for these thing) - only after it to mount doesn't need any functionality...

EDIT: Found One (there's always a first time) - http://www.7dayshop.com …rers_id=&products_id=8381 (external link) :)
