Still working on the flower/plant thing. Critique appreciated. This
one is in a flower bed by our house. The morning sun was behind
and to the left of it.

I would say that you were very lucky.
In general, shooting into the sun (even though it may be only a bit forward of the camera plane) causes problems. In this case the lighting is very kind to you because the plants appear almost transparent.

The exposure, color balance and composition are all faultless.

Congratulations!

Thank you both for the comments. My mother-in-law has quite a green thumb. She planted and cared for these flowers which makes them a great subject.

Regards
Mark

Hello Egan. Welcome to the forum. You are correct - the sun was more to the left than it was (slightly) behind. The moderate backlighting also gave the leaves at the bottom of the frame their somewhat bright(er) than normal backlit fringe. There was still ample ambient light to fill in the face of the flower.

Thanks for viewing Egan.

The lighting, crispness, focus and composition are all too good for me to fault. I particularly like that the flower is so crisp, but the focus of the leaves below establish foreground, and the leaves above background. Very dignified and elegant. Cheers, Tony

Very sharp photo. I think to make it better try to keep the green stalks away from the blossom to really keep focus on that flower.

Thanks for the comments slim. I think the stalks above and behind could go away. I was using the surrounding greenery as framing. For clarity, which were you referring to? Thanks again.
