Just bought a new Canon 450D and wondered if anyone knows roughly how many shots i might get before having to re-charge the battery.
I know it depends on a few factors. I shall be taking shots at the BSB at Cadwell Park soon for a full day.
I know it's like,
how long is a peice of string but i just want an average.
Thanks.

Regardless of how long a battery will last I always would recommend that you have a spare battery with you at all times. The estimated battery life should be in your manual.

600 shots at 23C, 500 if 50% are flash.
Less if cold or using live view (p100).

The manual overstates the numbers a bit. I took mine on vacation a couple months back and I got about 400 shots in RAW with no flash on any. The temp was about 85F. I checked about 50 of the shots on the screen immediately after taking them but otherwise kept the screen and camera off between shots.

If you're really pushed for battery life, bear in mind that it seems to be the CF card and LCD that use up the battery more than anything (if you're not using flash)

Did a shoot for a big 10k run, basically taking shots of as many runners as possibly for the website. Turned off the LCD, was shooting medium sized jpegs... got 2,500 shots on about three quarters of a battery (this is the Canon battery on the 400D, the 450D's has something like 40% more capacity). Had IS turned on all day and was using servo AF a lot too!

Using the LCD and lived view for a number of shots on a fully charged battery, I have gotten over 600 shots before the battery meter dropped from the full mark, this was also using the IS feature of the kit lens. This was all on a 90 F day.

Alot of it actually depends on the battery and how well it cycles (charges). I have had batteries that where the same capacity and one ran out of juice quicker then the other, and it also took longer to fully charge then the one that lasted longer.

The stated numbers in the book are what Canon recorded during thier testing, your numbers may and can vary, look at mine 600+ shots and I still had juice left in the battery (these shots where taken indoors on a different day), ended up taking I believe another 150-200 shots (including uploading the pics to my computer) before I had to recharge the battery. Mind you I do not have the BG-E5 yet, those with it will be able to take more photos since you can use 2 of the LP-E5s in it.

Thanks Timmy and Eldorf some great advice.
All in all it looks like i won't have to worry too much then, seems that you can get a substancial amount of shots from one charge. :D

Quickshot- As I stated your results may and probably will vary, take mine I was bale to get about 800 shots on a full battery, where as others have only gotten 500 shots, yet j0sh_dc5 got over 1000 shots using the LP-E5 battery. Its always good to have a spare battery or two, just remember to make sure they are fully charged so your not trying to swap in a dead battery for a dead battery. In my case I have used one of the Dymo Letratag label printers to print of a couple labels for the batteries I have, now they are numbered, so that I know what battery to grab when the one in the camera dies.

As I also mentioned the BG-E5 will also help extend the time between battery changes since you can use 2 of the LP-E5 battery packs in it (or 6 AA batteries using the included AA battery adapter). Another option if your going to remain semi stationary (ie photo shoots with a model) and indoors theres the AC adapter.

No matter what route you go I would suggest getting at least one spare LP-E5 battery to start off with. If you decide to go the grip route you will already have the second battery that you can put into the grip along with the first one.

I was given a digipower extended battery pack for my birthday for my XTi. I took 3K pictures over the space of 2 weeks on a single charge. It was a mix of soccer tounaments and shooting around the house of the kids and such. Mix of flash and no flash, LCD on the whole time I used it. I wound up charging it because I didn't want to be caught out with a dead battery and no chance to charge it, not becasue i got any low battery warnings.

The con to it, is it's a bear to pack around. It weighs a lot, and when you combine that and a 70-300 lens it's quite a weight hanging around your neck. Ive used it since I got it in May, and just decided to replace the stock battery for my around the house shooting and break out the big one during tourney's and work.
