100 dollar range if possible.
What is out there? BH and Adorama and Amazon just have SOOOO many choices! Don't know where to begin.

Take a look at the Manfrotto's. The 679,680, and 681 are all good pods and only cost about $60. I use the 679 with the 3232 swivel head and am quite happy with that combo.

I use and recommend this combo as well. If you've got a tripod ring for your lenses, you can skip the 3232 swivel head, I rarely use mine. Derek

Good combined setup? That is the 681, with a head. With the tripod ring, the head won't be necessary and the 681 pretty much only differs from the 679 in weight capacity (which is pretty much a non-issue) and the 679 is almost half a pound lighter (fairly significant). I personally chose to save $10 and get the 679B since it can easily handle my 70-200 f/2.8 mounted on my 1d2N. Derek

Yup, I would. Like I said, I never use mine. It is so easy to switch from landscape to portrait with a tripod ring, and that is pretty much all you need the head for. Derek

It can be a real pain. The other thing you may wish to consider is a quick detachable plate so you can quickly use the camera hand held if need be.

IMO, the main advantage of one of the release heads on a monopod for an application like yours is just that, simple and quick attachment and detachment of the camera, not necessarily the tilt or swivel feature, but that's just MHO.
