Bright days, using 5D and 1Ds Mk III, lens is either Canon 28-300 (f/3.5 to f/5.6) or 70-200 f/2.8...any suggestions on how to get the right "blend" for good shots? I was all over the place, especially with clods coming out.
Damn I suck at this :)

The right "blend" of what? What are you trying to do? Any example shots (with EXIF, please)? What do you feel is wrong with the shots that you are getting now?

Canon 5D: $2400
Canon 1Ds Mkiii: $7800
Canon 28-300: $2200
Not knowing how to use it and asking on POTN: priceless ;)

For camera gear there's mastercard, for everything else turn to POTN :p

Sorry, couldn't resist! Hope you all have those ads on TV there else it'll make no sense. Post a photo if you want tips on how to do better.

Do you mean the sky is being blown or something like that? In which case you need ND Grads. Other than that I have no idea what "right blend" means.
As Mike suggested, we need pics.

Try manual in those tough conditions. For a good starting point, first set the f-stop & shutter speed you need. Then adjust the ISO.
Need an exposure crutch?

This shows how the subject can affect the exposure & why manual keeps me worry free:

Agreed - I don't see anything wrong with the pic.

I think he is expecting too much from the gear when that is a pretty good shot.

Thank you for the kind words but to me the picture seems "flat" and the grass that is not in the shade sort of "bright". I look at others pictures here and many of them are breathtaking and just "perfect". Mine do not approach that.
Thanks for the link on exposure crutch...that is very helpful.

I put some others here...
https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=550625
no realizing that it would probably be better to put it in that section if I want to talk about specific photos. Thanks again for the help.

(side note as to the expensive equipment: I am fortunate to be able to buy some good equipment, so I figure if I do that if there is any "failure" it is going to be on me and not the equipment. I seem many that second guess even the best equipment, and I am no where near that point so I am lucky in a way. I just have to learn how to use it.)
